DAY 14
Thursday August 24, 2006
The Independence Day that almost never was...
Today was to be a big day in Ukraine.

They wanted to celebrate 15 years of Independence.

Parties were planned - concerts were scheduled - people were ready. Then the bad news...

Earlier in the week - on August 22, 2006 - an airplane tragedy occurred on Ukrainian soil. An airplane carrying 170 people from a resort in Anapa - back to St. Petersburg - crashed outside of Donetsk Ukraine.

There were days of mourning planned.

It was then the direction of the government - that Independence Day celebrations be postponed.

This was not the best idea - was the word on the street.

There was great sympathy for those who died in the crash & their families - but the feeling on the streets was that postponing Independence Day - was like moving Christmas Day.

And so the scaled down celebrations began.
Local military gathering before the Independence Day celebrations
A militia truck parked - waiting for the celebrations to begin
The sound company bus
Some creative wiring - I’m sure wouldn’t pass the electrical code - if there actually is one...
Definitely a police presence today.
